The inaugural graduation ceremony for IntelliMapLab students was held. For the past six months, IntelliMapLab has been utilizing this cutting-edge space, which forms part of Intellias’ scientific and practical laboratory, to educate future professionals on the creation of maps for car navigation systems.

27 May 2024, Lviv, Ukraine — Intellias established IntelliMaplab in collaboration with the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics at Lviv National University in October 2023. The lab is located in one of the auditoriums of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Over the past six months, more than 20 students have been gaining theoretical knowledge and practical experience under the guidance of Intellias experts. They were creating NDS maps for car navigation systems, developing location-based services (LBS), learning to process geospatial data, etc. Most of them have successfully completed the training and received certificates, as well as the opportunity to complete an internship at Intellias on real projects.

IntelliMapLab is a significant project for us. We have established teams of students, with some program participants subsequently being hired for internships at Intellias. We are grateful to the company’s experts for their invaluable contribution, which has enabled our students to gain access to the most relevant knowledge required in the market today. Our objective is to ensure that university graduates are successful, gain employment in leading companies and establish their own businesses. And thus, contribute to the state budget through taxes that will be invested in the development of our country. Furthermore, the presence of highly qualified specialists will enable Ukraine to attract significant, knowledge-intensive projects and become a prominent player in the global tech market.

Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work and Informatization of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv

The training at IntelliMapLab consisted of two parts: theoretical and practical. During the theoretical part, the students studied Scala and functional programming for two months, got acquainted with the Apache Spark framework, JTL library, and geospatial data representation. They also learned how to create advanced algorithms, link and connect APIs, define solution architecture, explored the basic Linux commands, shell scripts, cloud services, and other necessary tools. In addition, the theoretical block included the study of navigation data standards (NDS), Agile principles, and work in real-world conditions. The IntelliMapLab graduates also mastered the NDS.Live map format, which introduces a new compilation method compared to NDS.Classic.

During the practical part of the training, Intellias experts supervised the work of three teams of students, who completed a range of technical tasks and worked on highly realistic projects. For example, they added artifacts for geographical objects marked with special markings (POIs) on maps.

I am grateful to everyone involved in this project, to the representatives of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and colleagues from Intellias. We have a great team that is developing the tech industry in Ukraine. The mission of IntelliMapLab is to expand the expertise and popularize technologies in the field of navigation map development and the global map community as a whole. In addition, such Intellias projects help young talents to start confidently in the profession. And the development of talented young people is one of the important focuses of the company. And not without a personal touch: we all fondly remember our university days. Therefore, the immersion of our experts as mentors and lecturers in the atmosphere of students is always about motivation, inspiration and positive emotions.

Viacheslav Slieptsov
Senior Delivery Director at Intellias, co-creator of the IntelliMapLab program

In their feedback on the course, students noted its high level of structure, clarity, and effectiveness. This was due in the main  to the learning environment being as close as possible to working on real projects.

Once the training program has been completed, students who have demonstrated the necessary skills and expressed a desire to work in the IT industry will be offered the chance to undertake an internship at Intellias. After gaining real-world experience and completing the adaptation process, interns will be able to apply their skills in commercial projects applying programming languages such as Java, Scala, Spark Framework, also related to the creation of maps in NDS format.

Intellias is committed to supporting talented young people. One of the company’s key areas of focus is collaboration with universities in Ukraine and abroad. In addition to its ongoing collaboration with LNU, Intellias recently partnered with the Ukrainian Catholic University to launch the IntelliDrive training program. This initiative provides third and fourth-year students of the UCU Faculty of Applied Sciences with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in embedded development under the guidance of Intellias Embedded development experts. Those participating in the IntelliDrive program will have the opportunity to develop their own solutions for the Intellias Automotive Kit, a portable digital dashboard for cars. Furthermore, the company organizes annual training projects and regularly holds thematic webinars. In particular, since 2021, Intellias has been running an educational hub called IntelliStart, which provides an opportunity for free study in relevant technical areas. In the 2022-2023 period, Intellias successfully implemented the Junior Stream program, which focused on teaching participants Java and Java Scala.
