Oh, it’s that time of the year again—the season of lofty promises to become better, more efficient versions of ourselves. But, let’s be honest, how many times have we abandoned our over-ambitious New Year’s resolutions? Too often, right?
So this year, let’s aim for resolutions we might actually stick to—the realistic, the ridiculous, and everything in between.
1. Update your profile picture at work.
That photo from your first year at the company no longer represents you (or your haircut). Your colleagues would appreciate seeing your up-to-date portrait. Even if it’s only so they can compliment your new haircut.
2. Start a “No calls day” challenge.
An entire day without 1-to-1s and syncs—what bliss! Will it last the whole year? Probably not. But give it a shot—at least until your manager requests a “quick call”.
3. Learn that one skill, you embellished on your CV.
We all want to impress potential employers, sometimes by sugarcoating our foreign language proficiency or claiming expertise in programs we’ve barely touched. It’s time to sign up for that course. P.S. No one said you have to complete it.
4. Stop piling up coffee mugs on your desk.
Since cutting down on coffee isn’t happening this year, at least stop piling up mugs on your desk. Take your cup to the kitchen immediately after finishing your coffee. Bonus points if you don’t hoard them on the counter either.
5. Keep up with your laptop updates.
Ever cursed your computer when it installs updates at the worst possible moment? Save yourself frustrating surprises this year by staying on top of your Windows (or macOS) updates. Turning it into a long-lasting habit will give you fewer headaches.
6. Figure out your signature email sign-off.
Skip the usual “Kind regards” or “Best wishes” and try something new and with more flavor—like “Till the next sprint” or “End of line.” Can you imagine an email like that getting ghosted? No way! It’s bound to get a reply within a few minutes—or at least make the recipient smile.
7. Invest in a robot vacuum.
Instead of chasing dust, focus on chasing bugs in your code. And while most people make resolutions to read more books, you’ll actually delve into reading all the specs and instructions—because every tiny feature makes all the difference!
8. Plant something and watch it grow.
Take it seriously: research the ideal soil type, check the watering schedule, and maybe even track growth progress in an app (or create one if it doesn’t exist yet). Isn’t the view of little seeds sprouting the antistress you needed?
