Christmas Countdown: 24 Advent Tasks for Tech Specialists

Stories
November 28, 2024

As December rolls in, there are many tasks to do like getting into jingle-bells mood, keeping work-festive balance, and wrapping up the year to kick-start the next one successfully. So, we came up with a solution—24 advent tasks for tech specialists. Let’s make the month memorable, one task at a time.

1. Take a moment to look around

Well, well, well. It’s the first day of the month, but the deadlines are piling up. Luckily, winter will be here for a while—remember to enjoy it.

2. Create a Christmas-themed playlist for cozy coding

Add some I feel good by James Brown or All I want for Christmas is you by Mariah Carey to your workdays! Set the mood for productive (or procrastinating) sessions.

3. Is it too soon to rewatch Home Alone? Definitely not!

Press play right now! The tickets in Jira can wait for two hours.

4. Ask your team lead about postponing deadlines

Whose idea was it to set deadlines in December? This has to be some kind of cruel joke!

5. Wear colorful socks or an ugly Christmas sweater

No plain looks of the day! Deer patterns, flashing lights, or snowflakes—embrace the festive warmness.

6. Write a letter to Santa Claus in a programming language you know

Santa’s tech-savvy now, so whether it’s Python or Java, code your wish list. Extra credit for comments and clean syntax!

7. Dedicate time to picking the best drink for Christmas Day

Channel your inner taster because codes shouldn’t be the only thing you analyze this season.

8. Get some fresh, frosty air

No time to go out because of burning deadlines? Then at least light a candle with the smell of winter while coding, that should do too.

9. Learn to knit

Discover your inner Tom Daley and pick up the needles, because why not? It’s a great way to distract from the old projects and start a new one, named “Scarf”.

10. Have some hot chocolate for a morning call

Start your day with a warm mug of goodness—but try not to spill it on your laptop during that early brainstorming.

11. Reappear on Instagram with weather updates

Haven’t posted in a year? It’s high time to share a snapshot of the snow outside. It’s not like anyone hasn’t seen it, anyway.

12. Build a gingerbread house (or try to)

It can turn out that fixing bugs is easier than constructing edible architecture. But hey, it’s the effort that counts!

13. Clean up your desktop, delete unused code, and clear out your inbox

Time to unclutter your digital workspace—it’ll feel oddly satisfying.

14. Make career plans for next year

Whether it’s a promotion, a relocation, or a major skill upgrade, take time to map out your 2025 goals.

15. Try cold showers and regret it

They say cold showers and ice baths are good for your health. Maybe. But staying warm seems like a solid idea, too. Try taking a cold shower this winter. Who knows, you might get into it!

16. Play vintage video games

Rediscover the charm of retro classics like Pac-Man, Tetris, or Space Invaders. Bonus points for using original hardware!

17. Set a countdown timer

Between coding, calls, and chaos, don’t forget to keep an eye on the holiday clock. Tick-tock, X-mas day awaits!

18. Do your no-bug ritual

Conduct a ritual so that during the Christmas vacation no unexpected bugs (or hot tasks) pop up.

19. Get ready for celebrating Christmas with your parents

Pros: free food.

Cons: fixing their TV and cellphones, because “aren’t you a technician or something”.

20. Make sure to use up all perks and benefits expiring this year

Don’t leave anything on the table—whether it’s unused vacation days or a certificate for workshops, it’s all yours.

21. Join your local Nordic skiing group

Find out it’s mostly for 70+ ladies, but they are kind of cool, and now you plan a tea party together.

22. Prepare presents for your loved ones

Forgot to go shopping? Try origami, macramé, soap making and 1001 other handmade crafts to cover up for your forgetfulness.

23. Get shocked at how little time is left until Christmas

Panic slightly at your to-do list but remember: you’re doing great.

24. Log off earlier

Close those tabs, and let the festive vibes take over. Enjoy your holiday break—you’ve earned it!
