We are looking for a Senior Python Backend Engineer to join a fast-growing digital health platform focused on improving healthcare data accessibility, interoperability, and patient engagement. You will be part of a team building secure, scalable solutions that enable healthcare organizations, providers, and patients to exchange and access clinical information through modern interoperability standards and cloud-native technologies.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex backend challenges, working with healthcare data standards, and building systems that have a direct impact on patient outcomes and healthcare innovation.

What project we have for you

You will contribute to the development of a healthcare interoperability platform that enables secure access, exchange, and processing of clinical data across multiple healthcare systems and external providers.

The platform leverages modern Python technologies, cloud-native architecture, and healthcare interoperability standards to support healthcare data ingestion, transformation, storage, and distribution. The system integrates with various external services, identity providers, healthcare APIs, and document-sharing mechanisms while maintaining strict security and compliance requirements.

The engineering team follows modern software development practices with strong emphasis on scalability, observability, automated testing, and continuous delivery.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Python and FastAPI
  • Build scalable asynchronous APIs and microservices
  • Implement secure authentication and authorization workflows
  • Develop integrations with healthcare systems and external service providers
  • Work with healthcare interoperability standards and clinical data formats
  • Design and optimize MongoDB data models and persistence layers
  • Collaborate with product, architecture, and engineering teams to deliver new platform capabilities
  • Implement automated testing and contribute to quality assurance practices
  • Participate in architecture discussions and technical decision-making
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues
  • Contribute to observability, monitoring, and platform reliability initiatives
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering processes and development standards
  • Mentor junior engineers and share technical expertise across the team

What you need for this

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong proficiency in Python and modern backend development practices
  • Hands-on experience with Python 3.x and FastAPI
  • Experience building asynchronous applications using async/await patterns
  • Strong knowledge of RESTful API design and distributed systems
  • Experience working with MongoDB in production environments
  • Familiarity with ODM frameworks such as Beanie or similar
  • Solid understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect (OIDC), JWT, and authentication/authorization concepts
  • Experience developing containerized applications using Docker and Docker Compose
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, and performance optimization
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as Pytest
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with healthcare interoperability standards:
    • FHIR R4
    • SMART Health Links (SHL)
    • SMART Health Cards (SHC)
  • Experience with healthcare data exchange platforms and clinical workflows
  • Knowledge of JWE encryption/decryption mechanisms
  • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and AI integration frameworks
  • Experience building MCP servers or AI-enabled backend services
  • Familiarity with QR code and image decoding technologies
  • Experience integrating with:
    • Google Drive
    • Microsoft OneDrive
    • Box
    • SMTP services
    • FHIR servers
  • Experience with Playwright-based E2E testing frameworks
  • Knowledge of Cucumber/BDD methodologies
  • Experience with observability tooling:
    • OpenTelemetry
    • Prometheus
  • Experience working with Kafka
  • Experience with AWS cloud services, including AWS Secrets Manager
  • Exposure to TypeScript and React development
  • Previous experience in regulated healthcare environments
